Objectives
This proficiency BOHS module provides background and practical knowledge in the surveying of buildings for asbestos and any necessary bulk sampling that may be required. It also provides general guidance on the management procedures necessary to minimise exposure to any identified asbestos.
The module provides the candidate with the practical knowledge and skills to carry out an asbestos building survey. On completing the course practical experience is essential before a level of competence can be attained.
Topics Covered
- Legislative requirements under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007
- Asbestos in Buildings – types and uses of asbestos in buildings, health affects, types of survey and how to carry them out including what information needs to be recorded and the safety precautions required. Also risk assessment of asbestos found and how to manage it, such as through an asbestos register
- Bulk sampling procedures and strategies
Practical work is an essential part of this course, whereby the candidate goes out into the field, and conducts a brief survey with bulk sampling under supervision.

Course Duration
3 days – including theory and written and practical examinations
Prior Knowledge
Candidates are expected to be aware of the contents of HSG 264 (Asbestos: The Survey Guide) and have a minimum of 6 months prior experience of carrying out asbestos surveys.
For P402 Refresher – candidates will already hold either the P402 or alternatively the CCP (Asbestos).
