Face Fit Testing
Face Fit Testing
A face fit test is designed to ensure that any respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is providing proper protection to the wearer. ABP Associates provide face fit testing to cover selection, wearing, care and maintenance of half masks and filtering facepieces.
- The training is specific to each delegate and includes:
- How to check the mask is working properly before use
- How to identify worn or broken parts
- How to check the mask still fits
- Limitations of the mask to be used
Mask Selection
Asbestos fibres can cause lung cancer and lung diseases so all RPE must give the wearer proper protection. When selecting a mask to be used for work with asbestos it is important that P3 filters are used which give a protection factor of 20.
Face Fitting
When a mask fit for the job has been chosen, we will run through a series of short tests. These are designed to demonstrate that the mask gives protection and fits the wearer’s face. The tests are qualitative so are simple and easy to perform, but they are clearly effective.
Please note that in order for the face fit tests to work, the trainee should not eat, drink or smoke for at least an hour before the test is performed. They should also be clean-shaven. Any stubble will prevent a good seal and the face fit test will fail.
Wearing
The mask should be the first item of PPE to be put on. Cup the bottom of the mask in the palm of your hand and place it on your chin. Next, lift the straps up and over your head and adjust them as necessary. Check the seal between the mask and the face.
The Health and Safety Laboratory has a fully demonstrative video on how to put on a mask correctly. It will be shown during the training.
Removing
The mask should also be the very last piece of equipment to be removed. Lift the straps up and over the head then take the mask away from your face – never dangle it from around the neck.
Storage & Maintenance
Keep your mask in a rigid box where it cannot get squashed or collect dust. Check it is working properly every time it is to be used.
