This course has been awarded “Gold Standard” by the BOHS.
Our certificate is displayed proudly in our in-house teaching laboratory.
Objective
This module provides theoretical and practical knowledge in the techniques of fibre counting of asbestos air samples using phase contrast microscopy (PCM).
The module is at a proficiency level which aims to provide the client with the practical knowledge and skills to be able to carry out the necessary/stated work.
The delegate must be able to describe the approved methods for fibre counting and have an understanding of their limitations and the requirements for quality control.
Topics Covered
- Setting up of a microscope
- Filter preparation and fibre counting
- Calculation of results and quality control
- Practical work
The full BOHS syllabus can be viewed by clicking here (PDF file; opens in new window).
This course is a very good introduction to the P404 course on air sampling and clearance testing.
Course Duration
2 Days – including theory, practical and examination
Prior Knowledge
Candidates are expected to be aware of the contents of HSG 248 (Asbestos: The Analysts Guide) and in particular Appendix 1 `Fibres in air: sampling and evaluation of by phase contrast microscopy`. Candidates will preferably have prior experience of analysing fibre count samples and may already be participating in a quality control scheme.
Delegates will be required to provide their own counting kit and microscope. These can be hired if necessary.
