Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples (PLM) – P401

Identification of Asbestos in Bulk Samples – P401

This module provides theoretical and practical knowledge in the techniques of Asbestos sample identification using polarised light microscopy (PLM).

Course Tutor:

Jean Prentice MSc. of McCrone Scientific

Course Dates:

  • 17-19 January 2012 – Fully booked
  • 20-22 March    2012 – Places available
  • 10-12 July 2012
  • 14-16 August 2012
  • 06-08 November 2012

Objectives

This module is at a proficiency level which aims to provide the delegate with the practical knowledge and skills to be able to carry out the identification of asbestos fibres in bulk samples.

To pass the practical assessment for this module the delegate will normally need to have some practical experience with polarised light microscopy and/or asbestos identification. We also provide a comprehensive practical course in applied polarised microscopy (APLM) to help delegates on their way.

Topics Covered

  • Asbestos Fibres
  • Set Up and Use of a Polarised Light Microscope
  • Analysis of Bulk Samples
  • Practical Work

Prior Knowledge

Candidates of this course are expected to be aware of the contents of HSG 248 (Asbestos: The Analyst Guide) and in particular Appendix 2 “Asbestos in bulk materials: sampling and identification by polarised light microscopy (PLM)”. Candidates will preferably have prior experience of analysing bulk samples and may already be participating in a quality control scheme.
